My spouse suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), requiring careful monitoring and immediate action during flare-ups. I have become adept at recognizing the subtle signs of an impending respiratory crisis. Handing over this responsibility to a new caregiver unfamiliar with my spouse’s specific triggers could result in dangerous delays in care. I should remain the first choice for managing their condition to ensure swift and effective responses. The support provided by HB909/SB488 has been indispensable in allowing me to continue providing this lifesaving care. The Virginia General Assembly’s actions have been pivotal in ensuring my spouse’s respiratory health is consistently managed. Amending these provisions could lead to inadequate care, significantly increasing the risk of severe respiratory distress. The current waiver draft might compel us to rely on caregivers who are not fully versed in managing COPD, potentially leading to life-threatening complications.
