Purpose of the meeting
This meeting will be open to the public and all are welcome. For more information, please contact the staff person listed. MEETING DESCRIPTION: The Technical Advisory Committee will hold a preliminary project planning meeting to discuss the development of a TMDL for the Bullpasture River, including the coordination of a public meeting. Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act and §62.1-44.19:7.C of the Code of Virginia require the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to develop TMDLs for pollutants responsible for each impaired water contained in Virginia’s 303(d) TMDL Priority List and Report. DESCRIPTION OF STUDY: In 2006, the Bullpasture River, located in Highland County, was placed on Virginia’s 303(d) list for a “Recreational” impairment. This listing was based on monitoring conducted by VADEQ between 1999 and 2004, which indicated that the river was not meeting the bacteria water quality standard. In 2010, this impairment designation was shortened when monitoring showed that the lower portion of the river (from its confluence with Davis Run downstream to its confluence with the Cowpasture River) was meeting the bacteria water quality standard. The upstream segment of the river remains impaired. During development of this water quality study (TMDL), VADEQ will work with the local community to review data collected from the river and determine the reductions in bacteria needed for this upper portion of the river to meet the bacteria water quality standard. Once this study is complete, an implementation plan will be developed to meet the identified water quality goals. HOW TO PARTICIPATE: Meetings of the Technical Advisory Committee are open to the public and all interested parties are welcome. In addition, comments are always welcome. For more information, or to share any comments on this effort, please contact the staff person noted below.
