Monument Avenue preservation

The latest attack on the historic Monument Avenue by the ACLU is misguided and shows their ignorance to the reasons why the monuments to Lee, Jackson, Stuart, Davis, and Maury were erected. They are not and never have been "monuments to white supremacy" as some characterize them. They are monuments to great Americans and four of them were native Virginians......five if you include Arthur Ashe. Their contributions in OUR history were to their country (the U.S. then to Virginia when she became part of the Confederacy) in defense of their homeland. The modern take on the cause for the War Between the States is that it was a war fought to free enslaved Americans. The Northern soldiers were the good guys and the South were the bad guys! That is not only inaccurate, it is a gross oversimplification of the root causes of the War. Although that debate continues among historians to this day that should not be a consideration when the preservation of these historic monuments along Monument Avenue are concerned. The citizens of Richmond and in particular the residents along Monument Avenue have let their voices be heard and the majority are against any desecration to these magnificent works of historic art. The Governor, the Mayor, and any other politicians that do not listen to the wishes of the people that they were elected to represent are not fit to lead in any form of democracy.
