The Lee Monument and the Avenue as a whole are protected historic sites. The statue is an integral part of one of the most beautiful avenues in America. I deplore the radicals that have forced us to implement rules for this public space. I hope these regulations will protect the statue and not be used as an excuse for removal in the name if public safety like North Carolina has done.
