Support for petition

Self defense is an individual right conveyed by the constitutions of Virginia and the United States. Lawful carry of a firearm in a state park would not amend existing hunting regulations or seasons, nor would it circumvent any existing restrictions on the use of firearms whether in parks or elsewhere. All existing restrictions, regulations and qualifications for ownership and posession of a firearm would likewise remain unchanged.

Law abiding citizens are simply asking that their rights as granted by the consititions not be infringed simply because they stand in a state park. Non-law abiding individuals (i.e., criminals) need make no such request as, by definition, they do not abide by the law. A distinction must be made between "citizen" and "criminal."

The law abiding citizens supporting this petition are not seeking to lessen the experience of any other citizen who visits a state park. Support of this petition is a means by which all who visit our state parks can and should feel equally safe. Being a "law abiding" citizen means holding the rights of others equal to those of your own. The constitutions grant the right of self defense to all citizens from criminals, wherever they may be.
