My family is currently seeking placement in a VA group home for my sister, an adult with intellectual disabilities. We have searched extensively (including on-site visits in many settings) and have been hugely relieved and encouraged to discover the L'Arche group home model. It is based on adults of ALL abilities building a long-term stable homelife together, and being deeply integrated in the larger communities their homes are located in. My family knows and understands my sister best, and we know that this is what she needs and deserves. It is our greatest hope that she may be able to join this community or one like it. This is a well-tested, effective, and eminently humane group home model that works. Please ensure its future in Virgina by removing the phrase "who do not live in the home".
