Yes - Supporting Experienced Technicians

There is a distinct division of thought between the DVM’s and LVT’s. I can appreciate that the LVT’s feel this is devaluing their profession and education. I applaud those that have pursued their education and received a degree. I also appreciate the unlicensed veterinary technicians that have spent 20 years or more working in this field. I further appreciate the experience they have gained during this time and am grateful to have them on my staff.

I would like for those LVT’s in more urban areas to understand the logistics of Veterinary medicine in rural areas in past years. Many of these experienced unlicensed techs are not without a license by choice. As little as fifteen years ago, there was no opportunity for rural residents to attend school online for licensure. Rural practices (and suburban and urban, too) did not see the benefits of LVT’s, so it would have been hard for those who did go to school and become licensed,  to see a monetary benefit for their tuition dollars.

I certainly do not advocate allowing an untrained person to place IV catheters, but I feel that a person who has excelled in their field for 20 + years and is quite capable of the task should be allowed to place the catheter.
