Putting in an IV catheter is not that different from drawing blood, and anyone can be trainined to do that. Arguments against allowing assistants to place a peripheral IV catheter seem to be more about concerns about job security than patient care. I think we can all agree that pereripheral catheters in surgical, hospitalized, and critical patients are paramount to being able to provide patient support. Allowing veterinary assitants to be trainined to place peripheral IV catheters will increase the quality, speed, and ease of patient care in the veterinary setting.
