Allowing non licensed veterinary technicians to place IV catheter is opening the door for inevitable greater problems in the future. What's next urinary catheter placement, intubation, epidurals, etc? The placement of an IV catheter is not just a simple task that is marginalized to putting the catheter in a vein. It is learning and understanding why it is important to prep the leg, the risk of infection, attaching the catheter to fluids, giving medications into the catheter, etc. By minimizing the placement of IV catheters as a task that 'anyone can learn' is short sighted and devalues the role and importance an LVT plays in our profession. I strongly oppose this change.
