After finishing 3 years of schooling to earn my title and the responsibilites that come with it, I do not believe that unlicensed assistants should be able to place IV catheters. Not only can this cause grave danger if done incorrectly, if not done properly infection can occur and patient harm. It is not worth getting the catheter in a minute or two quicker in non-life threatening situations where a tech may not be available that that exact moment. I have a great respect for what licensed veterinary technicians do, and respect the title and duties that we have so rightfully earned.
