Dry Needling

I understand that Virginia is considering a proposal to relax the scope of practice law for physical therapists to practice acupuncture without substantive training. I have serious concerns about expanding practice without commensurate training - no matter what healthcare practitioner it effects!

Patient safety depends on practitioner competency, and I believe that regulatory oversight provides protection for the often-naive consumer. I would hate to see Virginia abandon the role of healthcare consumer protection  Acupuncture is a complex practice, and wisely requires significant preparation for safe and effective practice.  Regardless of the trend to label it "dry-needling", the risks of poorly trained practitioners have been well-documented.

Please learn about the practice of acupuncture and what it requires training-wise.  Keep the practice regulated for safety.  Do not allow unskilled practitioners to bring an ill-prepared practice to the public
