Yes to Use of Dry Needling

I want to add my voice to those who have written in support of the use of dry needling as part of a physical therapy program. I have received dry needling over the past several years as part of a treatment following several orthopedic surgeries. I must admit that I was skeptical at first when the therapist described the application. However, it was not long before I began to experience progress with the therapy program.

In addition to the success of the application, I was very much impressed with the anatomical, physiological and clinical knowledge of the therapist. On several occasions I purposefully engaged the therapist in a conversation regarding the nature of the training that he has as well as the professional development and inservice opportunities that he participates in. I was impressed that he is hightly educated in the function of the various body systems, their interconnectivity, and the application of dry needling coupled with message and strengthening exercises as a treatment program. The therapists are very serious in the use of dry needling and take all the necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of the patient. Dry needling is in and of itseslf differes distinctly from acupuncture as the goals and methods and outcoms differ.

I support regulations proposed by the Virginia Board of Physical Therapy and feel that they are sufficient to ensure public safety and should be fully enacted.
