Dry needling should be performed by acupuncturists, not PTs

Physical therapists are not trained or licensed to perform dry needling on patients. PTs are trained and licensed to perform muscle therapy, and they do it well. Acupuncturists are trained and liceensed to pertneedlong, and they do it well. Yes, dry needling is an effective muscle therapy, but PTs are not qualified or trained or licensed to perform this service. I am attending school to become an acupuncturist; my cohort includes massage therapists and physical therapists who want to be able to expand their scope of practice and provide additional healing modalities (including needling) to their patients--and they are attending school to receive the proper education, qualifications, training, and licensure to provide these services. Needling should remain with acupuncturists. Physical Therapists who wish to treat their patients with dry needling can go back to school, or refer out, or combine their practice with an acupuncturist who can offer this service.
