Support for Executive Order 50

As a faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University, this issue affects myself and my students directly. With mental health issues on the rise in our student population, in an environment that can be very high-pressure, allowing students to carry arms on our campus would be like throwing gasoline on an open fire: a very bad and likely dangerous idea.

In 2008, my partner was on the Northern Illinois University campus during a campus shooting that saw five students murdered, the shooter himself a suicide, twenty-one students wounded and an entire campus and community traumatized. Virginia knows all too well the consequences of campus gun violence. This is a no-brainer: extend the ban on firearms in government buildings.
