I'm a pro-choice sort of guy.  If while on a hike you choose not to be armed when you are far from your car, telephone, cellphone service, other descent folks and witnesses... then so be it.  Don't deny me my choice to be able to protect my wife and two girls when I do.  I respect your right,  don't disrespect mine.  Believe me...I'm the guy you want on the trail if you have trouble!
