If the criminals followed the laws they wouldn't be criminals.  Criminals actually prefer unarmed victims (9/11, Virginia Tech, etc).  Law enforcement can't be everywhere at once.  Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness must include the right do defend one's life, be it in one's home, out in public, and in State Forests.
