Strongly oppose

I am a graduate with a MS and PhD, both in Counseling Psychology, from Virginia Commonwealth University. I strongly oppose any plan to require professional counselors in Virginia to graduate from a CACREP-accredited program. There are numerous reputable programs that are not CACREP-accredited and that are producing EXCELLENT professional counselors. Moreover, many of those programs are run by highly-skilled, expert Counseling Psychologists. Requiring CACREP accreditation would not allow programs in Counseling Psychology to continue producing top-notch professional counselors. CACREP's efforts to require their accreditation is tantamount to bullying their colleagues outside of counselor education and creating a monopology on training of professional counselors. I strongly urge you to oppose this short-sighted and mean-spirited attempt to require CACREP accreditation.
