Commenter: Parent and Teacher

I support this action

As a parent of a current high school student, I want to be notified of any sensitive, sexually explicit material assigned to my child in the classroom. The student is not always aware, or always notified by teachers, that they have the option to opt out of reading material they may be uncomfortable with.  I don't want my child to begin the reading and then bring to my attention any material that makes them uncomfortable.  In my experience, my child has often begun reading the material assigned in the classroom, and would be exposed to sections they are uncomfortable with, before they can discuss it with parents. Students and parents should be made aware of any sensitive, sexually explicit content in assigned material before the assignment begins, and clear guidelines provided for parents and students to know the can exercise their right to opt out and provided a list of acceptable alternatives to choose from.
