As a lawyer, lesbian parent, and someone who has been in the child welfare field for 20 years, I can tell you that laws prohibiting adoption by same sex couples are among the most irrational and archaic. Allowing same sex couples to adopt is grounded in social science research, good social policy, morality, and the United States Constitution.
