Clinical hours, nursing school

More than ever it is critical that nurses entering the workforce have the maximun number of clinical hours available. It is difficult to develop judgement  and /or problem solving skills when not exposed to situations requiring such. Most employers do not have the option of providing lengthy 1:1 orientation with a new nurse  or the availability of a  long-term mentor. There are more opportumities in community based health care but without a strong clinical base, it is very difficult for a new graduate to be placed in this setting. I think all nursing schools should provide a minimum number of clinical hours and the goal should be to exceed the required standard. Nursing is a profession that mandates continuing education the entire time one is practicing. To decrease clinical hours does not allow for the strong base that is needed.
