| Purpose of the meeting This is the first meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for the North Fork Catoctin Creek TMDL. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), with assistance from Virginia Tech - Biological Systems Engineering Department (VT-BSE), is undertaking a water quality study in the North Fork Catoctin Creek watershed. Biological monitoring data collected by VA DEQ have shown that portions of North Fork Catoctin Creek do not meet Virginia’s water quality aquatic life use standard due to poor health in the benthic biological community. The purpose of this study is to investigate the cause(s) of the benthic biological impairments and develop a total maximum daily load (TMDL) for the pollutant(s) causing the impairment in each stream. A TMDL is the total amount of a pollutant a water body can receive and still meet water quality standards. To restore water quality, pollutant levels have to be reduced to the TMDL allocated amount.
