Board Description: The fifteen members of the Library Board are appointed by the Governor for five-year terms and may serve no more than two consecutive terms. The board issues regulations to facilitate the creation, preservation, storage, filing, reformatting, management, and destruction of public records by all agencies. It issues regulations specifying permissible qualities of paper, ink, and other materials to be used by agencies for public record purposes. The board provides assistance to agencies in determining what records no longer have administrative, legal, fiscal, or historical value and should be destroyed or disposed of in another manner. The board establishes policy concerning what books and other library materials are to be kept, housed, or exhibited by the Library of Virginia; enters into agreements with institutions and organizations with similar purposes; promotes education in the realm of history and library and archival science in the Commonwealth. The board is authorized to sell, grant, and convey or to change the form of investments or control of any funds, securities or other property. The board establishes standards under which library systems and libraries shall be eligible for state aid. The board accepts grants of federal funds for libraries and allocates such funds to libraries.
